Birgit works as a curator at Hurstville Museum & Gallery, Georges River Council, Sydney.

She was curator at the Harry Daly Museum, Australian Society of Anaesthetists from 2010 until 2012.

From 2008 until 2010 Birgit worked as a historical consultant on several projects in South Australia, including collection documentation, significance assessments and oral history projects.

In 2008, she completed a PhD at the University of Goettingen, Germany. Her thesis Holy relics turn into history was published in 2009.
