PHANFARE

Ten Year Index: Issues Nos. 1 to 112 (Aril 1985 to June 1995)

Introduction

Phanfare was first published in 1985 as the members' newsletter of the PHA NSW. It broke new ground in providing a forum for professional historians which was less formal and more topical than the august academic-style journals. It was the profession's first significant universal "trade" magazine in NSW and the ACT. In recent times it has broadened into a more public forum for professional history with a large non-member readership. The only significant disadvantage for Phanfare during this time has been that much valuable and entertaining writing has been buried in the now-numerous back-issues. After ten years it is time to consider an annual index for Phanfare and, as a first step, this index for the first ten years has been produced.

Compiling this index has not been without its difficulties. The casual, often flamboyant style of the magazine in its early years reflected Phanfare's gentle editorial anarchy. Sometimes features were not what they seemed. Book reviews could metamorphose into commentaries about other things half-way through, important items would be buried in a visual chaos and authors' names were often conspicuous by their absence. If any significant item has been missed or if anyone has not been duly acknowledged I sincerely regret it. Please let Phanfare know and an erratum can be published.

Finally, I hope users of this index will not be too frustrated by the lack of detailed cross-referencing and sub-division of subject areas and the somewhat abbreviated rendition of titles. Indexing the first ten years of Phanfare has been a big bite. Hopefully future indexes will benefit from more detail.

Notes on the Index

Introduction

There have been 112 "numbers" at the time of this compilation but there have in fact been 113 issues. Every Phanfare editor will verify that errors in issue numbers occur at about 9 pm on production night, under the influence of an immodest amount of "Chateau Cardboard", whilst dutifully using the previous month's cover as the model for the next issue. Subsequent editorial collectives, under similar benign influences, then get confused and overcompensate. Fortunately the yin and yang of issue numbers soon found its balance (probably not soon enough for most librarians). The cause of the present disparity, a major stumble in 1987, is dealt with thus:

Issue no. as listed in this index Issue no. shown on cover of issue -

  • 23 24 (April 1987)
  • 24 24 (May 1987): shown correctly
  • 25 25 (June 1987): shown correctly
  • 26 25 (July 1987)
  • 26A 26 (August 1987)

In addition, no 74 was actually December 1991, not November as shown on the cover, and no 110 (April 1995) shows no 109, March 1995 on the cover.

To help users relate issue numbers to dates the following information indicates which issues were published in which year: 1985 (issues 1-9); 1986 (10-20); 1987 (21-30); 1988 (31-41); 1989 (42-52); 1990 (53-63); 1991 (64-74); 1992 (75-85); 1993 (86-96); 1994 (97-107); 1995 (108 +).

Under each entry in this index the number before the hyphen is the issue number, the number after the hyphen the page number.

PHA Official Material

The second category, Articles and commentaries - not provenanced, includes some official PHA material in earlier years. No rigorous attempt was made to distinguish official material from opinion until 1993. Official material since then is listed under the PHA categories, Phanfare or Public History Review.

General

Under Reviews the name of the reviewer (where known) is shown in brackets. Excluded from this index are advertisements, job notices and the regular feature What's On (which has appeared in virtually every issue).
