Challenges around writing the biography of a hangman include gaps in the historical record and the ethical dilemmas that come with writing about our criminal past. Join Rachel Franks in conversation with Bonnie Wildie (State Archives and Records NSW), to hear about Robert Howard – the longest-serving executioner for New South Wales – and how his story has been told in a new book An Uncommon Hangman.

Rachel Franks holds PhDs in Australian crime fiction from Central Queensland University and true crime texts from the University of Sydney. She is the author of An Uncommon Hangman: The Life and Deaths of Robert ‘Nosey Bob’ Howard (NewSouth, 2022).

6pm for 6.30pm start.
