I interviewed him a few years ago for a radio feature I did on the history of prisons in NSW – he was very generous with his time and expertise. His wife Joan had passed away not long before I did the interview, and he was in the midst of tidying up her papers for donation to the National Library of Australia. I was so touched by the love, affection and respect that he had for her, not only as a life partner, but as an intellectual peer. Many a historian and heritage professional owes him a great debt for his many years of dedication and passion to Australia’s built heritage, not only through the very excellent publication The Conservation Plan – http://australia.icomos.org/publications/the-conservation-plan – but also through his engaging and accessible conservation plans for an array of important heritage buildings and places.
